Hello Friends and Family!

Hope you are all doing well and enjoyed a great Memorial Day Weekend!

I spent the last 3 days at a Memorial Day Soccer Tournament here in the Northern Suburbs of Chicago where my two youngest teams participated!!

Great things we took home from the tournament was some serious “farmers tans,” maybe some mild heat exhaustion,  but best of all my U10 Girls placed second!!! Its a fairly large tournament (hundreds of teams) and we had 12 teams competing in our U10 division, so we won our pool play, then won the semi-finals, and then lost in the finals 1-3, but had a great time overall!!! For many of my girls it was one of their first few tournament experiences ever, so something to remember and build on for the future!!!

I finish up as a head coach of three teams (U10, U11 and U14 Girls) with the soccer club I coach at as of June 10th after our final league games wrap up. It’s been an amazing opportunity to be involved in the community and travel soccer club as a head coach over the last 4 years and I’m excited to continue my experience in coaching as a Women’s Soccer full-time assistant at Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL starting on the date of my return from Uganda to prepare for our quickly arriving fall college soccer season!!!

In Summer 2012 News -

All Financial Support for Uganda has been raised/received!!! Thanks to everyone who was a great piece of this, your support helps make all of this a reality!!!

Last week Athletes In Action secured my flight which has me departing Chicago on June 18 and returning July 20 – sooo…IT’S OFFICIALLY OFFICIAL! Flying from Chicago O’hare to Washington DC to Brussels, Belguim, to a day later and 20 hours on a plane – I’ll arrive in Entebbe, Uganda!!!

June 18-July 1 – Will be with Athletes In Action serving at Noah’s Ark Orphanage School and Medical Center!!!

Things to do before going to Uganda -

Shots/Immunizations – “Yellow Fever” is the only “required” immunization to get into Uganda, but…while visiting the travel physician to receive the shot, they tell you about all other risks involved…get bittin by a mosquito, eat something on the food, stuff in the water, get an open wound, etc….

So now I’m officially an immunized or vaccinated person of Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Meningitis, Malaria, Typhoid, Polio AND Yellow Fever.

Job Transition!!!

As noted above I will be spending the next few weeks finishing up as a head coach at the soccer club I’ve been coaching at over the last 4 years. While I’m not completely removed from the club, I will not be the head coach for any teams for the next 2012-2013 soccer season. So this end includes about 8 more games in the next few weeks, final practices, team parties and 2012-2013 travel tryouts – which are nothing short of intense and time consuming, but are an important piece of the crazy machine that is club soccer…!

I’ve absolutely LOVED my time as a coach with these kids and the community has been a great place to coach at. An example of the relationships built: last week a family, not on my team, texts me before a game they are aware of and says “Do you want to stop over for a burger after your game tonight?” living on my own and being tired and hungry… this was nothing short of amazing and this family is such a blessing!!! And it was a great hamburger.

My full-time position at Trinity International University was set to begin July 1, 2012. With being in Uganda from June 18-July 20 the Athletic Director at Trinity approved my time in Uganda, allowing me to start in the office regularly upon my return. Our players arrive for training camp in the first week of August, so in preparation for these few weeks missed I’m working on anything possible to work on now such as game scheduling for the reserve/jv team, etc.

Prayer Requests:

- Many of my closest friends have gone into ministry over the last year, many participating in ministries over the summer: Val – going into full-time ministry with the Charlotte Eagles. Holli and Chris in full-time ministry with Adventures in Missions. Ashleigh returning from a year of ministry with hosting study abroad teams with International Teams. Liz – full-time missionary with Athletes In Action in Germany – also going to Uganda. Jenny and her husband with Athletes In Action to Africa for basketball. Rebekah playing for Charlotte Eagles. Our student-athletes at TIU Soccer many involved in ministry over the summer including 4 with the Chicago Eagles – traveling to Brazil soon!

- For preparations: receiving donations and packing and bringing many shoes to donate to Noah’s Ark and Jerseys to Juna Amagara!

- For health: overall health protection and specifically have nagging tendonitis in my ankle – over the last month – causes swelling and pain around my ankle – Africa is going to be a very “active trip” so prayer over this is very appreciated!!!

- For travel: I’m traveling by myself to Uganda and meeting my team there. Also, when I meet up with the church team on July 1st we are traveling 4 hours by bus to our destination.

- Team preparations: working with our leaders from the church team to best prepare our high school team for all of the students first time serving in Africa.

- Overall prayer covering this trip with the Lord’s power, grace, strength and mercy!!! Let His work be done! Let the light of God’s love be working in us and through us on this trip. For transformed lives, for fellowship, ministry encouragement, service, and expansion of God’s Kingdom!!!

Thanks All and as always feel free to email, text or call anytime!

Exciting News!!!

There’s been an amazing development during my journey to Uganda this summer!

Over the last few months I’ve been preparing and working towards the two weeks in Uganda with Athletes In Action. During this time my church, Christ Church Lake Forest found out I’d be in Uganda at the same time a team from our church arrives! The Athletes In Action trip actually ends the same day the Church team arrives.

When the church found this out they approached me with the opportunity to join their team, and after time of prayer, support raising, seeing how the Lord would lead in this and in other various logistics, by God’s grace I’ll be in Uganda from June 17-July 20!

What will the 5 weeks in Uganda contain? Let me share with you!!!

- 2 weeks with Athlete In Action in Mukono, Uganda sharing about Jesus while running sports camps, humanitarian projects and other building projects for Noah’s Ark Orphanage, School and Medical Center. (More information below in previous blogs!)
- 3 weeks with Christ Church, Lake Forest and a team of students from our Senior High Youth Group(SHYG) and Leaders serving with full-time Christ Church missionary, Matt Kehn and the ministry he lives and works with in Uganda - Juna Amagara Ministries, which shelters, educates and supports children in Southwest Uganda – many of their children have been orphaned due to HIV/AIDS, war and violence. Part of this ministry has included the development of a residential discipleship program!

Hello Everyone!

Uganda 2012 departs on June 17, and I couldn’t be more excited! However, with all the excitement of the opportunities, experiences and ministry to come is a lot of preparations and some funds are still needed!

The funds needed to raise are $2,500-$3,000 before Mid-May in order to secure finances for the plane ticket through Athletes In Action.

Financial Support Update: Currently, along with amazing encouragement I’ve had many generous donations given already or verbal commitments totaling $1,800!

That leaves $700 minimum to $1,200 maximum left, however the longer we wait to purchase tickets, the higher the cost…so working to raise the funds quickly!!! Would you like to join my support team!???

Thank you so much for all who have donated and committed to support through giving financially!!! This is all completely impossible without the grace of God, His amazing provisions, and your generous heart and desire to give!!!

Shoe Donations Update: I’ve received close to 20 pairs of shoes/soccer cleats so far, and am expecting to reach close to 75-100 before I leave!!! Many excited givers in my community (you know who you are!) and family who are anxious to give!!! The targeted items are athletic shoes/tennis shoes or soccer cleats, ideally in children’s or teenagers sizes, but anything in usable condition will be gratefully received!

I am just a small part of the total effort of shoe collecting for this trip a long with the rest of the team collecting shoes in Europe as well! We prayerfully hope to be bringing hundreds of shoes together to Noahs Ark School, Orphanage and Medical Center!!!

How to get involved:

- Financial needs! – Funds still needed and needed soon!!! Checks written out to “Athletes In Action” and mailed to me! – Email me for street address: wendymoore16@gmail.com

Good Afternoon Friends and Family!

It’s been awhile since I’ve made a blog update, as things have been fairly routine around here! Over the last 8 months I’ve been coaching 5 different soccer teams in the Chicago area, including the head coach for four different youth travel soccer teams and Assistant Coach at Trinity International University! However, as time has gone by I’m excited to reflect on the past and announce some new opportunities!!!

The last year has been amazing, and I’ve felt the Lord continually bringing challenges and blessings in various ways:

-        Leading my first missions trip to Germany and Costa Rica was a great ministry opportunity and I’m so thankful for the time I had to pour into our teams, build relationships with Athletes In Action staff in Germany, and share the message of Jesus to the German and Costa Rican kids, families and soccer teams we were with! (see blogs below for pictures and stories!)

-        Also, I’m excited to announce that as of July 1, 2012 I will be a Full-time Assistant Coach at TIU!

Of course, all of the above was nothing of myself but by God’s abounding grace and Christ working through me, and through you my supporters to encourage, finance, and pray along the way!

Recently, I’ve been invited by Athletes In Action to join a team of coaches to serve at Noah’s Ark Children’s Ministry in Uganda this summer! The team is made up of 7 coaches affiliated with Athletes In Action all meeting in Uganda for two weeks of ministry at the end of June!

Athletes In Action is a sports ministry that was created in 1966. Today, hundreds of full-time AIA staff are working world-wide, capitalizing on the world’s love of sport to communicate the message of God’s love and forgiveness.

AIA has a presence on many college campuses impacting athletes in all sports through outreaches, Bible studies, chapel services, and mentoring. AIA also has a pro ministry that reaches athletes, coaches and their spouses in the NFL, NBA and MLB. AIA also partners with other ministries, such as Noah’s Ark, and local churches world-wide. You can check out AIA through it website at  www.athletesinaction.org.

Over the last year, Athletes In Action has been collecting shoes in various ways to donate to Noah’s Ark, including partnering with marathons in Europe receiving old shoes from runners the day before their race. Our goal is to bring hundred of shoes with us to Noah’s Ark Orphanage, School and Medical Center near Mukono, Uganda (see photo above) Website: http://en.nacmu.org/

This trip of Athletes In Action’s to Mukono, Uganda also consists of:

-        Humanitarian efforts and sports together to serve the children at Noah’s Ark and share the message of Christ

-        Putting on soccer camps throughout the 2 weeks for the children of the orphanage and school

-        Practical building projects and serving the people at Noah’s Ark in any way that they need us over our time.

Since Athletes In action is a non-profit organization, it allows its participants to find sponsors to help cover the costs of ministry involvement. All donations are tax deductible. AIA has asked me to raise $2,500 by May 30th to help cover the cost of transportation and in country expenses.

Here’s where you come in…! I will be on the trip from June 18th-July 1st, dependent on raising the funds of $2,500, and want to ask you to join me this summer in any way you feel led to be a part of it all! Would you consider donating a gift of $500, $200, $100 or $50?

Here are all the ways to support me in this trip:

-        Financial supporters –  If “Yes! I would like to give a financial gift!”

  • Checks can be written to “Athletes In Action” with #2793518 on the memo, which is the AIA account for my trip. Please return your check to me (email me for address).

-        Shoes Donation: Any old, used, new (in usable condition shoes) will be gratefully received  – contact me directly!

-        Prayer support – for logistics, finances, travel, safety, health and ministry…and everything else in between!!!

-        Follow my blog your reading at http://wendymoore16.wordpress.com/

I am deeply grateful for your support!!! To answer any questions you can contact me directly at wendymoore16@gmail.com

For His Service,  Wendy Moore

It has been about 2 and a half weeks since we returned from Costa Rica and my life and the fall soccer season has took off at lightning speed…!

It began two days after we landed back in the states with over 60 soccer players coming in from all over the states, between the Men’s and  Women’s Soccer Teams at TIU. I bring up the Men as well because our Head Coach, Coach Gilliam, is the coach of both teams, and they run in the same season, so you can see it is a joint effort with our coaching staff to get these programs to their highest potential.

After about a week of three practices a day, and one rest day in between, we took off with around 70 people, between both Men’s and Women’s Team, Coaching Staff, Support Staff, Trainers, and a few Trinity Professors to Portland, Oregon. In Portland we had the opportunity to play two strong matches against Corban College in Salem, Oregon who is receiving votes for the top 25 in the NAIA, as well as playing Concordia of Oregon who is ranked in the NAIA as #3 nationally. The women’s team posted results of 0-2 loss against Corban on Thursday and then came out very strong for a 0-1 loss against #3 Concordia on Saturday.

Each day in Oregon, Coach Gilliam had a devotional prepared for the teams to begin the morning. Much of his devotionals in training camp and in Oregon had been based out of the book “Chasing Daylight” by Pastor Erwin McManus, where he selected topics of Uncertainty and Risk to challenge our teams through the wisdom in this book as well as biblically using the story of Jonathan defeating the Philistines out of the book of 1 Samuel.

We also got to visit some beautiful sites in Oregon on our off day including Multnomah Falls, and traveling to Vancouver, Washington for an amazing evening at a Men’s players grandparents beautiful home on a large acreage of land on a river side.

Overall we were very proud of the teams effort and growth throughout the trip both on and off the field. The ladies showed to be very teachable and and focused all weekend on how to best learn and execute our system of play.

After returning from Oregon my season only got larger the next day by beginning my fall soccer season as the head coach again of three travel soccer teams at the Lincolnshire Lightning Soccer Club, which is just a few miles from Trinity. I am blessed to be the returning coach for the U10 Black and U11Girls teams at Lincolnshire, as well as my first year with the U15/14 girls. Because we have lights at our top of the line facilities in Lincolnshire, it allows me to be at Trinity during the day and early evening for practices and games, and then be at travel soccer at night under the lights.

After two more days of training since Oregon our Women’s team traveled to NCAA Division III #7 ranked Wheaton College for an exhibition game. Wheaton has always been a strong school for Women’s Soccer and we have been blessed to scrimmage them in the preseason throughout the years. We ended the evening last night with a 0-1 loss, and huge steps forward in our growth as a team. Though we have yet to put one in the back of the net, the team, coaches and players included are highly committed to getting better everyday, and executing the level of play we are capable of, not only now, but as coach always says, to be the best we can be, when the best is what counts in November! But he also shared with us in a devotional to not just focus on the exciting start or the story book ending, but stressing the fact that those moments are often created by what takes place in between the two. The miracles that come, come from putting yourself in a place where miracles can happen… and this is not just on the scoreboard either, but how each of us lives our lives each day, performs on the practice field, who our lives and play should reflect, and who we are living and playing for – all for the glory of Christ!

Keep checking back for more updates!

For Him,

WJM

Last Day in Costa Rica (Blog #4)

Buenos Noches!

Well, things are going great here and hope you are all doing well back home too! Thursday and Friday we had two more wonderful days at Roblealto to play with the kids, share testimonies, sing songs, make crafts, and continue with painting work around the site. Each day our hearts are more and more moved and impacted by not only the beautiful children at this ministry but also the holistic purpose and impact of Roblealto on each kid and each family member involved with the children. It is difficult to write all the stories, as each of us has had our own experience with a child, teacher, or group of children at Roblealto. One thing that Coach mentioned after we are all continually moved by the effectiveness of this ministry is that it was also founded back in the 1930s, which can almost prove for itself that it is well established and even rooted in the Lord and bearing much fruit for many generations. If you havent already we highly encourage you to visit their website and learn more about the ministry at Roblealto – www.roblealto.org and also view a video on you tube titled Roblealto Bible Home – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnWYfrPVk1o

Thursday evening we had another set of matches about an hour travel up into the mountains. The setting fo these games were incredible and we couldn’t help but feel so blessed by the opportunity to play where we were in the midst og Gods beautiful creation and culture in Costa Rica. Since the sun goes down early in Costa Rica the lights were on for the games, and we were quickly educated on the size of moths in Costa Rica! The women played first and again played another strong match against our strongest opponent in Costa Rica and came out with a 2-0 win. The men followed the women’s game with another strong game as well, specifically putting out a confident second half performance to win an exciting 3-2 over a team called Flores. After the games we were able to meet with the opponent and share testimonies and pray with them as well. Friday we had our last day at Roblealto and were able to give gifts to each of the classrooms and even some to kids as well to keep! This was such a blessing to us to experience seeing the joy and thankfulness on their faces. We mostly gave away items we had collected or purchased back home to various teachers for their rooms, or to each kid in the classroom to have, and even some players gave away personal items such as jerseys or t-shirts for the children to have as well.

After our good byes we loaded up and headed out to Punta Leona, Costa Rica which is located on the Pacific Coast for our final night and debriefing. On the way we drove through some incredible scenery going through the mountains and rainforest, as well as making a few stops at fruit markets and at stop at a river bridge where we witnessed huge crocodiles in the river below in the wild! We are now at our resort for the evening and have enjoyed a wonderful night of swimming in the ocean, great food, relaxation and fellowship. I must cut this short now as we are about to begin our final debriefing in Costa Rica! Tomorrow we depart at noon for San Jose and will begin our final leg of travels back to Chicago. We are to arrive in Chicago around 1 or 2am so keep us in your prayers! As always your prayers have been felt and we are extremely blessed to have each of you supporting us! Thanks for following us so far on the trip and you will soon be able to catch up with us in person when we return! Prayer requests Health and recovery for minor illnesses and/or nagging injuries, specifically for the overall well-being as well as our return flight home and the start of training camp next week Continued growth in our faith and walks with the Lord Being aware, available and active for God to use is even more still as we depart and return to Trinity! God Bless!

“Yo tengo gozo en mi corazon” (Blog #3)

Its Wednesday “Yo tengo gozo en mi corazon” means “I have joy in my heart!” Today we got to sleep in! Everyone was excited to catch up on sleep before our 7:30 breakfast. The schedule for the morning was very similar to the other mornings, with devotions from Coach Gilliam in the book of Hebrews, and quiet time to follow. We are all still in awe of God’s creation and beauty here in Costa Rica. It is awesome to spend our morning in the prescence of God to start off our day. After quiet time, we were able to have some time to ourselves, which many of us spent juggling on the field behind our “dorms”…typical of college soccer players At around 11, we had lunch which included rice, beans, some type of enchilada, a combination of veggies (tomatoes and mushrooms, and mammons. (Wendy thought they were called mammochinos…she was a little confused!) Once we were done with lunch, we got ready to go to Roblealto for our second day! At the site with only 10 team members, the players switched roles. Instead of painting they went in the classrooms to work with the children and vice versa. At the other site with the majority of the team, there was worship, the David and Goliath Bible story, and many heart to heart conversations. The men were to leave the sites at around 330, however we ran into a little mix up. Supposedly, we are to pay an exiting tax for leaving Costa Rica and we thought it would be solved in a short manner of time…it was not! We went to the bank to figure it out, but they are currently holding our passports until we get it sorted out, which should be today (Thursday). So pray that it will go smoothly! The men were supposed to play at 5 but because of the holdup, we arrived at about 6. Thankfully the men were still able to play! The facility was both indoor and outdoor. To describe it better, the building was open and the turf fields were under the roof. Pictures will be posted after the trip! The women played four 25 minute halves against the same team and won both. The boys played four 20 minute games against two different teams, lost their first game and won their second. We arrived back to Sendas late, around 9:45 and had dinner, worship, and debriefing with Doc. We all went to bed pretty tired and worn out. Tomorrow is our last day at Roblealto Prayer requests: That lives would be touched at Roblealto on our last visit For strength in both teams as we come to the end of our trip Safety at both games tonight That relationships between both teams and the coaches would continue to strengthen. Thank you for all your love, prayers, and support!!

Pura Vida! (Blog #2)

Buenos Noches! Good Evening! While the literal translation of “Pura Vida” is “pure life,” it is a common Costa Rican saying, that was even found posted as soon as the airport, to say “everything is good” or “everything is perfect!”

Sunday: After a long day of travels on Saturday we woke at 6:30am for breakfast at our dormitories of rice and beans, egg dish, cereal, coffee, juice, mango, papayas and bananas. We departed for an early church service that was one of many church services being held that morning. After the service we played inner squad 7v7 soccer at a turf court inside the church facilities that was actually just outside the doors of the sanctuary. The team was very anxious and excited to play again together and to be playing amongst the beautiful scenery and backdrop of the Costa Rican mountains. While we were playing various adults and children from the church would come and watch and even some boys joined our scrimmaging. After we were done we were able to pray with those from the church who had joined our time and then went off to lunch at a Costa Rican restaurant.

It is rainy season here so we’ve been told that you can expect rain every afternoon around 2-4pm…and so far that has been true! At lunch that afternoon we had a wide variety of food selections to say the least. Much of our team choose something between chicken, fish or meat all with rice or fries while some others had octopus or even some had seafood or fish that was still in the fish or shell of it’s life when it was alive…if that makes sense. Jon and Doc, an assistant men’s coach and a professor from Trinity, had fish that head was also charred and present on their plates as well, yummy…! We spent the rest of Sunday touring some streets around San Jose and having team devotionals and small group time. Monday: Sunday was a lighter day on the schedule which helped us prepare for the crazy week ahead, and even as I sit and write this we are still so overwhelmed by how God is working and moving on this trip!

Monday morning we woke at 6:30am for breakfast soon followed by team devotionals and quiet time. During our team devotions this week Coach Gilliam is taking us through the book of Hebrews, which has all been such a blessing to hear and also be challenged by and cause you to think and evaluate our faith and how we daily are living our lives and living out our faith.

Later that morning we reconvened for a practice session at our facilities where we are staying. We have been blessed to have a host of dormitories at a seminary here in Costa Rica that is located with a beautiful view amongst the mountains and even has a soccer field! After training we had a quick lunch at 11am and departed for our first day at Roblealto, a christian child care center.

Our group has the opportunity to work at two of Roblealto’s sites in Costa Rica. 10 people are at one site where their are about 100 kids that are a bit younger, while the rest of the team is at another site with 150 kids. The team of 10 is at a facility that has great need for maintenance help, as they have one maintenance worker. 5 people from that team helped with painting and 5 others were individually spread out amongst 5 classrooms each with a teacher and about ten kids per classroom where they help with playing games, teaching times, crafts, and simply loving on the kids and making them laugh! The rest of the team is at the larger site where they have most of the kids at one time. They begin with a organized craft time that we brought down, which on Monday was paper bag puppets and decorations, then followed by free time and fun game play. At this site they will also have the opportunity to share a testimony or bible story each day that the players have prepared ahead of time for the children. Once we were picked up from our site we went to one of Costa Ricas famous shopping centers…roll your tongue when you say it…Walmart! We have had no injuries or illnesses but needed to pick up some first aid items for blisters and sore throat medicine, as well as gave the team opportunities to get Costa Rican coffee and other snacks, to bring home! Coach Gilliam purchased some mamonchinos, not sure if I spelled that right, but it’s a Costa Rican fruit that is pink and looked like a mix of a porcupine and a blow fish. After he shared his first bag with much of the team, he went back and purchased more for the group to experience this Central American fruit experience! We then returned to Sendas, our host facility for a dinner of spaghetti noodles and some type of sauce with bread and salad. After dinner we had a time of worship followed by a debriefing time that we do every evening.

Tuesday: Late breakfast! We got to get up for 7am breakfast, and we are so happy with the team as they have never complained once about our crazy early times or late dinners! Today was Game Day! We had team devotions with Coach again followed by quiet time and then departed for our games! Both teams had games today, the women and at 1pm and the guys game was at 3pm. Thankfully we were playing just up the hill from each other so each team was able to support each other for portions of their games. The Women had a fantastic showing for their first game after just one day of practices where we saw them playing with much creativity and coach ability, and we left the game with a final score of 6-0. After the match we had the opportunity to pray with the other team as well as share a brief testimony from one of our senior captains Rachel Bowker. After the women’s game our bus driver, Luis…who is fantastic and such a great price of our trip, took the women’s team up the mountain to the men’s game. Looking out from one end of the men’s game you were looking down from the mountain out on the city and we were even above some of the clouds, it couldn’t have been any more beautiful. Also, for the Men only having one day of training they played a competitive match, experiencing much Costa Rican favored officiating, which the women had as well, yet came out with a 2-1 victory. Since today was a Costa Rican holiday we were not able to go to Roblealto as the centers were closed, we were able to play our matches earlier in the day and have some time around San Jose for a late lunch and some shopping. We stopped at another famous Costa Rican restaurant…McDonalds…! This was one thing completely from the Lord on our trip as well. We did not expect to go to eat here, but our driver took us there and we went with it. While we were waiting to order food Eli and Ryan, one of our men’s players and men’s assistant coaches were approached by impoverished looking gentlemen who asked them if they could purchase him something to eat. After speaking with him for awhile they came to find that he had HIV and had a wife and daughter at home. After informing him about who we were and why we were in Costa Rica the guys asked him if he was a christian. With a confident refusal to faith in God, the guys continued to learn more of why he did not choose to believe so far in his life mostly due to his illness and poor conditions and life situation of his family. The guys continued to share with him about Christ and the good news of the gospel with him and his demeanor began to change and the Lord opened his heart to receive Christ in that time! Jon, our men’s assistant coach assisted with communication here as well as he is fluent in spanish and was able to confirm his understanding of the message of Christ. Much more happened throughout this time during and after but we are so thankful, humbled and excited for this man Nester who is now a part of our family in Christ. Upon the guys departure from him they were able to share verses in the bible with him, and purchase dinner for him and his wife and daughters, Carla and Carla Diana, who had not eaten much yet in the day. When they said their good bye’s Nester said he would see them later, and when they looked at him as to what he meant he pointed up in to the sky.

After dinner we returned to Sendas for worship, debriefing and dinner time. Debriefing has been a great experience for everyone to share what God had showed them during the day or something they were blessed or challenged by with some other framework given to the team to encourage them as well. So, now the players should be asleep and we coaches are sleepy as well…so before we depart I would like to thank you for your prayers as we have felt them in many ways and would like to share some brief prayer requests as well as remind you to keep in touch with our blog and prayer calendar posted earlier in this blog. Prayer requests: Tomorrows games for both the men and the women Our time at Roblealto Continued awareness, availability and action for the Lord to use us as he would have for his kingdom and glory!

Hey everyone,

Its a bit long so here’s an outline if it helps:

- Favorite Moments
- Significant Impact

Currently:

Three flights later with an overnight in Amsterdam we made it back from Berlin by yesterday afternoon! Berlin is 7 hours ahead of Chicago time, so we were all very tired by the time we got in as we had been up traveling since 10pm Saturday night central time. If you were not aware, the US Women also played their quarterfinal match yesterday morning vs. Brazil and after playing a man down for the end portion of the game and coming back late in overtime with a goal to tie it 2-2, the US won in a shootout to advance to the World Cup Semifinals vs. Japan!

It is now 7am Monday morning, and as tired as I was last night from being up for 24 hours, I think my body thinks its afternoon time. They always say to stay up when you get back to the normal time of when you would sleep in the time zone you are in…so hopefully those efforts help to get back on track! I leave again tomorrow morning to go to Minnesota for a week to celebrate one side of my families Christmas and grandmas birthday, so prayers are appreciated for my body to recover and to continue to process and debrief everything from the last two weeks despite the busy-ness.

Enjoy the updates below, and I look forward to catching up with many of you soon!

Soccer in Berlin:

(above – our Athletes In Action team in red or white jerseys)

Wow, what can I say…I don’t even know where to start, despite the fact that God is more perfect and powerful than anything we can imagine. His love is so great, and I can’t help but hope and pray in His grace that I may submit completely to Christ over how to better live my life for His glory…and while we may never know the details of His will for our lives…we can pray, and it is my prayer that I will live my life active, aware and available to fulfill His purposes that His love will be known and He will be glorified.

We ended our trip with having played 5 games throughout Berlin against various club teams. Most of our games were against each club’s Women’s team which in Germany is made up of players from 16 years old and up. This also meant that because many of the girls were around my age I played in 4 of the 5 games as well. While we left Germany 5-0 the real victory over the trip is not all about what was done in results on the scoreboard, but in the life changes, relationships, and opportunities that came to share Christ, and to invest His love into each of our girls and then onto the people we came into contact with and spent time with throughout Berlin. After most matches, if the other team was willing, as most were, we would ask them to pray with us after the game. Though we couldn’t understand their language, we could tell by their body language was a very new concept and a bit of a shock, but they were willing. Through that one of us and then ultimately through Kevin, our AIA host, who speaks fluent German and would translate and do much of the communicating, would share who we were, why we are in Germany and why we play. In summary, this gave us the chance to share with them that we are Christian athletes who believe that Christ died for our salvation, and through his grace and love we seek to use our gifts and abilities not for ourselves, but to glorify God, and we love to play the game and to build up our talents as much as possible, because we recognize it is God who blessed us with the opportunity and ability to play, and it is our joy and worship to return it back to Him and hopefully bring Him glory on the soccer field. 4 out of the 5 games we were also able to share a meal with the opponent whether at a restaurant or at their clubhouse. Since the ground was already broken in the fact that we were Christians it allowed for further conversations and simply openness on sharing our lives with the German girls we played against. One thing we learned while we were out there is that much of the German culture and people are more closed off and want to keep to their own business. One of our hosts shared with us that culturally in Germany it is very difficult to gain a quick friend, but once you can build a friendship with someone they most likely will be a strong friend for a long time. So you can imagine the challenge of trying to have these conversations with that added onto a language barrier, where we had to pray we were lucky enough to have a few decently spoken english speakers on each team to help us have those conversations. But each time God provided and though it was a struggle to communicate at times, with constant effort and intentionality to invest we were able to begin a friendship with each team.

Beyond going to Berlin play games, share Christ, and even to challenge and build into our own players, one of our biggest roles was to connect our hosts (Kevin AIA Berlin Director and his family, and Liz AIA Intern from America and now pro soccer player in Berlin), who are long term missionaries with Athletes in Action that live in Berlin to more athletes, specifically more German club soccer teams, that would not be as easy or possible without a team like ours to initiate the relationship through playing a game against them.

We received much affirmation and excitement with each of the club teams we played against to continue a relationship with Athletes In Action and a future that only the Lord knows of what can and will come of it, but we are so thankful to be a part of His work in Berlin!
